Homemade baby food

I was asked recently about homemade baby food. My response was that I love making it and it is so simple. I know that their are a number of resources on the internet on how to make baby food, this is my take. I use wholesomebabyfood.com as a starting point, it has great lists of what to feed and when and recipes.

I have found that Lily is a lover of all things squash.  This is how I do acorn squash.

Most acorn squash are greenish but this one happens to be orange.  It looks very much like an odd shaped pumpkin.

I scrub it clean and then cut it in half lengthwise. I swear to you cutting this thing open was the hardest part of the whole thing. I had no idea how tough it was.

I then scraped out the seeds. Since making this one I have bought a set of grapefruit spoons at Target. (I couldn’t find them on the Target website. Those things are a life saver.

Then they went into a pan, flesh side down with an inch or two of water.

I cooked them at 400° for about 1 hour.

The flesh was nice and soft and the skin was a little browned.

I scraped all the meat into my little food processor and gave it a whirl. You might need to add some water to get it to puree nicely. I try not to add too much water at this point though. From here on out it is very much like making sweet potatoes.

Once its cooled I spooned it into an ice cube tray, wrapped with plastic wrap and froze it overnight.

I make butternut squash just like this too.

I have a different method of heating these up then most people that I’ve read. We have a microwave but we never use it.

In the morning I take out a couple of food cubes and put them in the fridge in the cup I use to feed Lily. They are usually mostly defrosted by the time I feed her dinner, although this method still works if I forget to take them out, it just takes longer.  Lily only eats solids at dinner, the rest of the day she nurses.

When I’m ready to feed her I turn the water kettle on and put the food cup in a bowl. Once the water has boiled I fill the bowl with water and if the food needs to be thinned I add some of the hot water to it. I stir the food every so often and it heats it up in about 3-5 minutes.

I try to always keep some frozen green beans and peas around for the days I forget to take cubes out. That way I just cook the beans and peas according to the package directions, throw them in the food processor and then feed Lily.

As you can see this takes a few more minuted then opening a jar but I love the whole process of making my daughter’s food. And she loves eating it.

Random pictures and a couple of videos

I finally got Lily laid down and I was going to try to post something about homemade baby food but I just don’t have it in me right now. I am SO tired. Sleep is a thing that Lily feels she has outgrown at the ripe old age of 9 months. You would think that since she’s not sleeping during the day she would sleep great at night but that is not what’s happening. Oh well maybe she’ll change her mind soon. For now here are some random pictures I’ve snapped over the last couple of weeks.

Bubbles and ducky

Lily still doesn’t love taking baths so I’m always trying to find ways to make it better. I think I figured something out the other day. At first she wasn’t too thrilled but then she relaxed and had some fun.

Dear Lily,

You are 9 months old.  You have now spent more time outside in my arms then you did kicking me from the inside.  Its kind of strange, when I was pregnant I had trouble imagining having a 1 month old or a 3 month old now I have a 9 month old!

You are getting so big and changing so much that I had to start this weeks ago so I didn’t forget any of the fun things you are learning and doing.

You are talking up a storm and its not just the sweet breathy sighs that we’ve gotten used to, you are telling us whole stories and using lots of m’s and b’s and d’s.  H is still your favorite and you added F recently.  Its great.  Just like all your other milestones you talked all day long on labor day and then didn’t use any of your new “words” for days after.  I thought I had maybe dreamed the whole thing up.  But now it is a all day every day thing and I love it.

You even tell us what’s going on when you cry.  Its hilarious, most of the time now you don’t just cry you babble and scream.  I’m sure one day I’ll understand what your saying but for now its all just cute little noises.

You have started that very scary practice of pulling yourself up.  It started with your crib.  The only time you’re in it is when I’m hanging up laundry and one day you just stood up like you have been doing it for years.  Now you pull yourself up on your bouncer and Daddy’s desk, really anything you can get your hands on.  You haven’t pulled up on the couch yet but I think that’s because its really squishy and you don’t feel secure there.

By the way its scary for me not for you.  I’m scared you are going to hurt yourself.

You love taking steps.  If I hold your hands you will take a few very odd unproductive steps and you just think its great.  You also will take one or two steps around furniture but luckily for me its just been one or two.

You are still perfecting your crawl.  Its still a flop type thing but you do it so well and get around all over the living room.

9 months old

Its so funny you will start to crawl away from me and then look back at me and smile from ear to ear.  Its like you are making sure I’m still there and I promise Baby Girl I will ALWAYS be there.

You are growing up before my eyes and its wonderful, amazing, sad, bittersweet and fantastic all at the same time. Keep it up.

Love,

Mama

I will always be there
